An online notepad that is ready when you are
Fast Note is a free online notepad for quick notes, drafts and snippets. Type or paste your text, watch the word and character count update live, then save it to get a link you can share. There is no account to create and nothing to install.
Live word and character count
The counters under the editor update on every keystroke, so you always know how long your text is. Handy for essays, tweets, meta descriptions and anything with a limit.
Share a read-only link
Save the note and you get a short link. People who open it can read and copy the text, but they cannot change it, so it is safe to post in a chat, a forum or a video description.
A private link to keep editing
Every note also comes with a secret edit link. Keep it to yourself and come back to update the note whenever you need. Your browser remembers it for you too.
Rich text or raw plain text
Format with headings, lists, links and bold, or switch to Raw mode to keep scripts, code and config files exactly as typed. Each note also has a /raw address that returns plain text only.
No account, nothing to install
Open the page and start typing. It works in any browser on desktop and mobile, in light and dark mode.
Kept out of search engines
Notes are not listed anywhere on the site and are marked so search engines do not index them. Only people with the link can open a note.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Fast Note free?
- Yes. Writing, saving and sharing notes is free and there is no sign-up. The site is supported by a small ad.
- How does the word and character count work?
- Words and characters are counted in your browser while you type or paste. The character count includes spaces.
- Can other people edit the note I share?
- No. The share link is read-only. A note can only be changed from its edit link, which is shown to you right after saving. Do not share that one.
- How do I edit my note later?
- Open the edit link you received when you saved the note. If you are on the same browser, the read-only page also shows an Edit button that takes you there.
- What is Raw mode?
- Raw mode replaces the rich text editor with a plain text box. Spacing, indentation and symbols are stored exactly as you typed them, which makes it a good fit for scripts, code snippets and logs. Your last choice is remembered for next time.
- Who can see my notes?
- Anyone who has the link can read the note, so treat the link like the note itself. Notes are not listed publicly and search engines are told not to index them. Avoid storing passwords or other secrets.
